Tenant disputes 'more common in the south-east'
2009-01-13
Buy to let mortgage holders based in the south-east of England are more likely to encounter tenants who might damage their properties, a survey has suggested.
Figures from The Deposit Protection Service (DPS) have shown that more than 40 per cent of disputes between landlords and tenants occurred in the south-east.
Damage to property caused 52 per cent of the disputes, while cleaning issues accounted for 36 per cent.
The majority of DPS cases occurred in London, with Bristol and Manchester the next most common cities for tenancy disputes.
DPS director Kevin Firth commented that one landlord even discovered that his property was being used as a brothel.
He added: "It is important to remember, however, that the number of disputes that do arise between landlords and tenants is relatively small."
According to the latest industry statistics published by the Association of Residential Letting Agents, some 95 per cent of landlords are aware of the requirements for tenancy deposit protection.
